The Congresswoman has shown the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that defines her district. Early on, Ileana combined her love for education and her entrepreneurial spirit and founded a private school in Hialeah, where she served as a teacher and principal for several years. A leader in the Florida Senate, she created and spearheaded the establishment of the Florida Prepaid College Tuition Plan, which allows parents to lock in college costs at today’s prices. Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen has championed causes precious to the community. In February 2006, she held briefings with U.S. port experts to determine what threat foreign control of our ports would pose. She has fought to bring home over $37 million in federal funds for the Port of Miami, so that it may be dredged and begin to serve bigger vessels and function more productively as a port, increasing it’s economic value of $4 billion in goods now being transported across the river and adding jobs to the community. Ileana has also obtained $27 million to dredge the Miami River and $7.55 million for Miami International Airport. She has been an advocate of Everglades Restoration, the largest federally funded restoration program in the nation’s history. Ileana has been instrumental in providing over $51 million for the Florida Keys and championing causes related to Monroe County since it was added to her district in 2002. Ileana has also been an advocate against drilling for oil off of Florida’s coast, voting against any major legislation brought to the floor that would seek to remove the Congressional moratorium. She recently secured $9 million in public assistance funds to Miami-Dade County from FEMA. The Congresswoman has allowed windstorm insurance to be considered as a tax-deductible expense, which would greatly assist residents of the Florida Keys. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen has been a true representative of the community that she serves, devoting her time and energy to a variety of issues important to her constituents, she has successfully championed all that she has undertaken and improved the 18 th Congressional District in South Florida.
